The Port is a source of energy and has an effect on room acoustics.
Generally a front ported Loudspeaker can be placed closer to a Rear Wall for Placement.

Why ports?
In a word Tuning.
Tuning is how a Bass-Reflex system drivers are controlled in a loudspeaker cabinet.
